Civil Union is basically an institution that is similar to marriage in all the other aspects except the fact that these are considered for the same sex people.

If one describes Civil Union in general terms, then it can be said that it is a kind of legitimately sanctioned relationship between two individuals and this is roughly considered as equivalent to marriage.

These days, it has been seen that many of the hetero couples are also taking up to the civil union as they feel that this provides them with more security as compared to marriage.

At the time of the establishment of this partnership, both the individuals who are going to stay together are provided with some privileges and rights. These rights and privileges include covering the partners with the health insurance and taking all the important medical decisions when any of the two is suffering from an ailment.

It was in Denmark in the year 1989 that the first civil union was established and laws were established that provided the lesbians and the gays to have a legal relationship.

After this, there were many countries that started recognizing the homosexual marriages and authorizing them also.

There are many countries that have given acceptance to the laws of the civil union and these are Finland, Norway, Iceland, United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Mexico and Israel.

There are many areas in United States that have also accepted the civil union laws and the first one to take this initiative was Vermont.

There are many people who have a misconception that all the civil unions work in the same way, this is not the fact at all as the one that is working in Denmark does not allow the homosexual couples to adopt a child

Another major difference is the recognition, not all the partnerships under the civil union are legal outside the boundary of the region that has acknowledged them.

Although there are many moves being made to see that the civil unions acquire a legal status outside their boundary, but till now no one has reached to a constructive conclusion and this is surely one of the argument that goes against these unions.

One can say that the lesbians and the gays who want to stay with their partner life long can consider a civil union as a primary step towards that but before this complete knowledge about the responsibilities and the rights has to be acquired.
